Last week we focused on minimalism and how you can actually lead a more meaningful life with less. After all, this is the perfect time of year to discuss such issues with holiday shopping (and food gorging!) running rampant. This week, I thought I’d provide a few more pointers as outlined by one of my minimalism mentors, Courtney Carver.
Below are three of the seven “deadly sins” Courtney lists on her blog BeMoreWithLess. They are worth noting as you attempt to shed excess stuff, static and weight from your life.
Just as we can acquire stuff in an effort to “Keep up with the Joneses,” so, too, can we become competitive with others in our attempts to live with less. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. What they have, don’t have. What they need, don’t need. None of it is of importance
to you, your life or your goals. Stay on your own path and carve out the personal and professional life that works for you.
Change doesn’t happen overnight. Whether you’re shredding irrelevant files, freeing up space on your desk or utilizing efficiency apps on your smartphone, chances are you’re not going to see an 86 percent increase in productivity or client retention overnight. That doesn’t mean it’s not working and it doesn’t mean you should give up. Sometimes big changes yield small, yet meaningful results that snowball as more positive momentum comes their way.
There is a reason we hold onto possessions significantly longer than we should. It’s called fear. Fear of not having enough. Fear of one day needing that item. Feat of how life, our schedule or our reaction to things might change if this particularly entity is no longer readily available to us. Change is good, though.
